Climbers get a bad rap from TIME 3-Sep-2003 At 9:07:17 PM V

A non-climber asked me the other day "do you know what bouldering is?", then mentioned that boulderers (and rockclimbers) had received a bad rap from TIME magazine in an article entitled Wearing Down the Mountains, from a couple of days ago (I got this link from rec.climbing). It's about the environmental impact of climbing in the USA.

I thought it would be a good idea to bring this article to peoples' attention here, as TIME magazine has a wide readership in Australia as well as USA, and I think we all need to be aware of public opinion about rockclimbing, especially if it affects our access to popular climbing areas. Personally, I have seen a lot of litter at places like Arapiles, usually in the form of cig butts or lolly wrappers.

In summary: it's a popular sport, so "climb clean" people, and encourage others to do the same!
