A couple of bushwalkers had their food stolen by possums at Du Cane hut (Overland Track) when we went to Tassie at the beginning of the year. Unfortunately for them they were way too underprepared for the walk. They had day packs, sneakers, a leaking fuel bottle, the girl was wearing a skirt and the guy had a sombrero. We also saw them buying warm jumpers at the Lake St Claire info centre so we initially thought they were only doing a day walk.
We overheard them telling someone at Pelion hut (we caught up to them despite spending a night at Pine Valley) the possums had eaten most of their food – and since they didn’t have much to begin with they must have been starving. We were smart enough to put our food in a bag and make a “piñata” so that possums couldn’t get to it when we stayed at Du Cane hut (for emergency reasons as my sis was mildly hypothermic).
Those creatures can be vicious though – they tried to rip my pack when we camped at Windemere and they managed to get 6 muesli bars out from some guys pack. He’d left it on the track to do a side trip and was spewing because he actually thought that another bushwalker had stolen them – but his pack was ripped so it must have been possums.
