Unfortunately, it can be really easy to be ripped off if you aren't 100% aware of what to look for when buying 2nd hand equipment.

Wherever possible, try and find out the history of the equipment... I say this because I was offered some gear for purchase at a negotiable price, and while on the surface everything seemed good... the gear had spent a fair bit of time in humid climates, meaning it would be a matter of time befor fungus set in I dare say.

Check the gear thouroughly, and even shoot off a role of film at the location and process it before making the final committment. Usually 2nd hand dealers are happy to comply with this, and it means that if there's any sort of loading error or metering issues you can get out of the deal and keep looking. $30 for piece of mind is far better than wasting money and time on anything less than good.
