I was recently in Bathurst and the Blue Mountains and would love to move to a country town, but unfortunately I’m stuck in Adelaide for another year if I want to get my long service leave. Country towns seem to have a much stronger sense of community, are generally safer and people appear to be less stressed. There are little kids playing with their friends and riding their bikes – which you do not get to see in the city anymore.
However, I got to interview some country kids a couple of years ago for a research project, and it seems they see country towns in a different way. They want to move to big cities where they’ll have more opportunities and better jobs. Young people in country areas also seem to abuse drugs and alcohol (more so than city youth) and have high suicide rates.
I think as you get older your priorities change and you tend to appreciate your family and friends more. You also realise that money isn’t everything and that doing something you enjoy is better than kissing butts just to get a promotion. Hmmm…. I must be getting old.
