While climbing at the Albury Quarry recently we noticed that one of the few sports climbs that exists there had a dangerously bent and deformed bolt plate. We decided to remove the damaged bolt plate so that the climb could be done using a slide on bolt hanger. When we removed the bolt we were shocked to find that the bolt was only 16mm long, as shown in the photo bellow. Very dangerous considering it was soft rock. The bolt in question was not reinstalled.
The moral of the story is don't go blindly trusting your life on bolts because it is hard to know how far they actually go into the rock. It could be 16mm or 100mm, how can you tell?
