Hmmm…. I think it would be great if all scientific phenomena could simply be explained by human anatomy and physiology or laws of physics (e.g. energy in=energy out). However, there are millions of people with addictions and millions of people who are obese. We live in the second fattest nation in the word (or is it the fattest now?). There are genes responsible for adipose tissue generation. You cannot entirely control your weight by how much you exercise or how much food you consume. There are theories that nomadic people e.g. may have developed a “thrifty gene” for example, which came in handy in times of famine, but now means that Aboriginal people in Australia and other Indigenous people in the world are more likely to be obese and have diabetes.
The influence our society has on our behaviour cannot be underestimated. The development of technology, new farming methods, sedentary lifestyles have all lead to increases of obesity rates around the world. Majority of jobs in developed nations are in the service sector. There are millions of people spending 9-5 in front of computers getting RSI. The added stresses of modern lifestyle mean that many people genuinely have no time to exercise. Sure it sounds like a cop out, but you cannot simply say that if you eat less and exercise more you’ll be skinny. It’s a simplistic way of looking at the issue. How many theories which look great on paper actually work?
