Twins are thinner than half ropes and are designed to be used together (as if one rope).
The UIAA test is with 80 Kg shared by the two ropes but they must hold 12 falls vs 6 for single ropes. They are a relatively new invention, the test was only set up in 1991,
and most companies only sell one model. They are mostly used in ice and mixed climbing in case chop one. Not much need in Oz...
Half ropes only hold 55 Kg in the test, the assumption is that (used properly) you won't fall as far. I guess the same result could be acheived (maybe more logically) by reducing the fall factor of the test. Lets face it 55 kG is a light climber.
