never saw this string before ...

http://www.photo.net/learn is where it is at ... most of what I learnt about photography I learnt here and hanging out with other photographers just bouncing things off of each other

Basic rule for shooting snow is as Simon has said. You do get better contrasts out of lower ISO/ASA films simply because of the density of the grain - (I'm a fuji geek so sorry for the bias) Provia is excellent for snow because it doesn't have ultra harsh contrasts and the tones are extremely smooth - Velvia on the other hand seems to make people look like they've been cut and pasted into the picture to me and that horrible red skin tone - BLURGH! Plus, Provia 100 has awesome results with skies - esp if you use a CPL filter.

If you are having problems with the contrast of light between the subject and the background, that's what fill flash is for - use it. I generally work by my own rule that I keep the subject two stops brighter than the rest of the image - so bump your flash up to 1/4 up to even 1/1 (when in the snow). Even better yet, if you can adjust the automatic exposure on your flash separately from the metering on your lens, do that!!! I think even most cheap digi-cams have this option these days (just find the option with a picture of a flash with a +/- next to it)

Admittedly I haven't got much experience in shooting in the snow but just by following basic photography rules my photos have *generally* come out quite satisfactory. If I can be bothered tonight I might scan some and put some descriptions of what I did with them ...

p.s. another cool trick to do is to grab an 80A filter or use tungsten balanced film and make everything look a sexy icey blue ... mmmm blue ...

p.p.s. nikon flash is soooo good, only thing that would make me want to swap from a canon ...
