Wow, kerroxapithecus… I feel exactly the same way about life and climbing – there’s nothing quite like the adrenalin rush you get when you’re climbing a hard route… or even a slightly challenging one, and the intensity of having to focus on that moment. Why anyone would want to take mind-altering substances and distort that feeling is beyond me. Or when you go overseas, where everything is foreign and you meet people with different values, beliefs, perspectives and experiences of life. Or even going bushwalking, and then having a hot meal with your friends around a (triangia in summer)camp fire. I think I’m more likely to remember all these experiences than other people are likely to remember their 1000th cone. I think life’s the greatest trip one could ever have.

Chronic alcoholics get something called Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome – sometimes referred to as alcoholic dementia. Alcohol affects and damages most body organs. I must say I haven’t read any literature that would link it to schizophrenia but it is associated with other forms of mental illness – such as depression and anxiety. Whether alcohol causes them or is consumed by people with pre-existing conditions is another issue.
I think my initial post was somewhat misleading – but it was designed to make people think. I don’t necessarily think that alcohol is better than marijuana or that smoking dope should be a criminal offence. However, I think that people should realise that drugs (whether legal or prohibited) are not harmless substances and really need to educate themselves about their effects. I also think that instead of throwing people with addictions in jail there should be more rehabilitation programs and that there should be more funding for mental health. But I don’t think that’s ever gonna happen. I think seeing the current state of mental health services should be enough to discourage anyone from taking drugs, to be honest.
