Used incorrectly a GriGri can stop you in a hurry, I have whiplash symptoms (12 months) from being dropped on static rope when the operator pushed down on it incorrectly then let go after I had freefalled several metres! At a height safety training day no less! :o(

Used correctly by a cool head GriGris are great, as the belayer will take the braking action into account and give a smooth stop!

I like the idea that they can be let go of after taking slack in a situation where the belayer has their own issues to deal with, ie avoiding the leader coming down, falling debris, moving to take up slack etc.............otherwise...............it's a tough call.
