As said the kingswood (wagon/panel van) is a good choice as is the Mitsu L300. The L series Suby (first consider if you really do need 4wd where you are going). Commodore/Falcan stn wagons are good and some can be found running on lpg. They are a dime a dozen at auto auctions too. For style points, the pop-top combi rates high but its hard finding a good one. Ex-commercial vehicles are great from a practical point of view but often have had a hard working life and can break major components late in life (clutches, g'box) which ruins a road-trip so beware.

Its nice to have a vehicle you can sleep in the back of when needed. Look for something machanically sound, nothing wrecks a roadtrip more than a major breakdown. Call me soft but I rate having a/c during summer, luxury!
