I find that for girls (well, me...) technique is way more important than strength. I couldn't do a single chin up if my life depended on it, yet I can handle the low 20s in the gym (even the AME wall). I just have to be clever about taking rests and make sure that I twist into the wall so that my core stability muscles take as much of the load as possible rather than my arms and shoulders. Sometimes, though, it is frustrating to see a beginner bloke able to just haul themselves up something steep using nothing but brute force.
