I'm having trouble getting my head around the dislike of figure 8s, firstly if friction is the problem then physics tells me that each generates exactly the same amount of friction to allow you to decend at the same rate the same distance?
Secondly the belay device is highly likely to create tighter radius bends than the figure 8 so therefore it is potentially harder on your rope than the 8. I can see where twisting may be a problem but I use a Austri Alpin 8 that is specifically designed for double rope and have never had trouble, then again I've tried other 8s as a one-off and the same applies. |
