""the next wave is chipping holds
off.

stripping 'classic' climbs of their holds to keep them interesting and new.
(don't need new guidbooks, just a pen to change the grades.)""

i don't know about that. tad extreme... one of my friends was climbing and watching a guy trying to set a route (can't remeber where) the guy was struggling and said to my friend 'i'll just chip a hold or two. i'd rather have a good 25 then a 28 no one can do'. my friends response: 'well you can f*$@ off then'.

it's the other extreme to what you were talking about really, the chipping to make it easier rather then harder. instead of admit that he couldn't do it, and leave it for someone else to do, he'd rather 'deface the rock' i don't think i can see people accepting that anytime soon. but it probably depends on the area. araps will grind down to dust before climbers accept chipping holds, but places like thailand and nowra, sports bolted areas are more likely to accept it i suppose...
