well, was looking at the onsight site and saw this..
http://www.onsight.com.au/gallery/overseas/czech/teplice/index.htm
check the bottom right picture. I was wandering if anyone knows how jumps are graded...(apparently the one in the photo is grade 2)

in this page
http://pluto.pslib.cz/hulka/tepla.htm
there is a picture of a grade 4 jump.

anyway, i wanna see more photos of jumping and know more about it....

looks crazy...

In the blueys on the weekend, we watched the movie Masters of Stone 5. There was this American dude (cant' remember his name) jumping from bridges, tops of mountains and cliffs. He made it his life's work to do some extreme jumping, he and the jumps he did were nuts!!

He also had a daughter and family that he wanted to spend more time with...pretty ironic given that he died due to the rope system failing (not shown in the vid) and went 'splat'...

dan osman was his name

he was also a solo exhibitionist.

apart from Peter Croft are there any other bigtime solo climbers still alive?

Jon Muir was in my opinion a big time soloist and he is still alive.

Weren't Dan Osman's jumps a little bit different than the jumps pictured. From my memory (and this could be wrong) he specialised in taking essentially massive falls. The story behind his death is quite sadening considering that the jump he died on was supposed to have been his last (no pun intended). The pictures show people jumping between things, Dan pretty much just jumped down.

Yes. The jumps were massive, with the rope system half way down the jump. So he would climb/hike well above this point to jump - prolly double the length...

Check out this Jump pic, the photographer has captured the fluidity of movement in a rather unique way.

Any idea what the jump Boston's Climb at Araps might be?? It's quite large and the landing and take offs are not great. (for those not aware this is the jump between Bluff Major and Minor)

Hey Mac, surely "Bostons climb" would have to be a 5, maybe a 4. We've been up there several times to have a look at it, and to shoot it, but every time we have bailed with our tails between our legs. It's freaking huge, with a totally crap landing, will make a great shoot, when we finally either, grow bigger balls, or find someone already with them. The one slightly lower is much easier, and not quite as scarey, maybe a 2.

Know the feeling well, maybe next time we are all in The Pines together we can motivate one of us (peer pressure someone) into having a go. I've done the lower jump and looked at the bigger jump and well you've been there, you know the feeling. We'll get there eventually, just remember to bring that fancy camera of yours.

It's 72meg so I hope you have broadband. I think this was from Masters Of Stone 4?

Sounds like a plan. Just let me check that my ambo cover is properly paid up....

I'm getting all excited just thinking about it. Or am I mistaking excitement for fear. Oh well best get some work done.

osman's jumps (rope testing, he called them) were fall factor 1, jumping from the attachment point of the rope. if he jumped a full rope lenght above the attatchment point he would have been dead a lot sooner.

Quite true, reminds me of this other famous quote

"Whats the difference between golf and climbing??

A golfer goes SMACK, SHIT whilst a climber goes SHIT, SMACK.........."

Yeah, totally different. Osman was jumping onto a rope (usually!) whereas the Czech climbers are jumping across gaps. Big gaps. Sounds like that one on the Bluffs.

I saw some of the grade five jumps at Teplice but didn't get to shoot anyone doing them unfortunately (it rained!). The guys who do the really hard jumps are specialists and not necessarily hard climbers. They sometimes wear body armour and steel-caped shoes because these are full superman style jumps to crap landings and apparently when they catch the jugs - or whatever they’re going for - their feet slam in so hard they’d bust toes otherwise…

Apparently there’s a video on the Czech tower jumpers floating around. I’d love to see it.

If Shaggy and I manage to work up the courage (If shaggy manages to "jeckle" me into it) we'll send you a copy of the shots. The gap on the Bluffs is huge and the landing is real crap. Good tip that about the steel caps. I'm not sure that the Bluffs jump would be a 5 but it would be close

Has Shaggy already signed you up for an exclusive?

Ooops sorry, wouldn't want to encourage this.

V V dangerous....
