I read the article & I think that most of the "experts" have no idea about what makes climbers tick. The only idea in the article that made sense to me was the idea that for most climbers it is about extending your control of a risky world. Hence our development & obsession with protection techniques. This would also explain why I've never heard of a climber that went to the casino: you have no control there. I also am unaware of climbers leading a life of crime (minor crimes yes, like Don Whillans & the Burgess twins). Even drugs get integrated into the climbing experience: I think that in Yosemite in the 70s LSD was considered part of the climbing equipment.
In addition, the community has a minority of adrenaline junkeys (which seems to be how most of the "experts" saw the sport) also exist as climbers: but they of course tend to die off (Darwinian)
