dalai - So are you suggesting we all have an obligation to go new routing as a pay off for climbing the routes of others ?

You can also contribute to the sport by confirming the grade and quality of other's routes, or simply by being a decent person and making someone's day out climbing a little better by some friendly words of encouragement. Personally I've dragged people I met in the Pines up routes like Kachoong and numerous others (who never would be able to get out and enjoy them otherwise). Is this not contributing to the sport ? Bottome line is that new routing is certainly not the only way to contribute to the sport (as you suggest). To label all of us who haven't been bolting new stuff "bottom feeders" is surely elitist. Gordon may well have been poking fun at Robbie with his comment.

I think you may also have the cause and effect the wrong way around. The reason that there's so much new routing interstate is because they are so strong. You're not going to get stronger doing a hard new route than you are doing a hard existing route so I can't find sense in your argument. The real issue is that the new routing in Victoria is typically 4 hours away from Melbourne (still the largest climbing community by population) whereas in NSW, the mountains and Nowra are both around 2 hours. Plus chuck in quality bouldering around town too for good measure. Bottom line is that it's easier in NSW because of geography.
