Could anyone please give me better directions for finding oxbow rocks. We went out there for a climb this afternoon and ended up bush bashing through Kabungi for three hours and did not find any climbable rock. We followed all the directions from the guide but got nowhere. Is someone playing a cruel joke on us???

Which guide? My guide, ie the one at:
http://www.chockstone.org/Meredith/Meredith.htm

Or the VCC guide? Because yeah, we found the VCC guide hard to follow as well. I thought I'd explained the walk-in fairly well on the above page, but maybe not well enough.

Did you start at the bridge? And head downstream on the Meredith side? It's not that far down, maybe 1km or so. Just keep walking on the high ground (to avoid the painful scrub), without loosing sight of the water and when the river arc's around to the left you'll find that spine-like ridge. Oxbox rocks is at the very tip, right against the water.

The only possible way you could miss it is if you did not have sight of the water and wanderred off on some short cut. You can not see the Oxbox rocks cliff from above. It is well hidden. Basically you can not see it until you are standing directly below it, so you must use your brain and look at the escarpments along the river bank and imagine it's presence. Use the force! Become the rock! ;-)

Thanks for the reply Mike. We crawled through bushes right the way along the river but could not find anything. The only thing I can think of is that we started from the wrong bridge because as soon as we went 10 metres from the river we could not see the water.
As we drove into Meredith from the Geelong side, we turned right at the milk bar and real estate agent. We were told that this was the right road by the estate agent, and the bridge was about 5km down the road. If we are going to the wrong bridge, could you please explain directions as road signs are pretty poor out that way....
Heading to Araps this w/end, at least we wont get lost!!!!

Dude, sorry to hear you got lost. We somehow found the place, but admittedly had a party of four to scour the countryside. I've added a detailed drawing to the Meredith guide. Hopefully this will help you. I'll also add a scan of a road map when I get some spare time.

Don't know if you had the right bridge. Did you find a very well establised parking area, and camping site? There was a sign saying camping required permission. The river was certainly visible once you got up on the high ridgeline, out of the nasty trees and scrub. Did you find a fence to cross?

Anyway, check out my drawing, which admittedly I did from memory so may not be to scale.

We were given the wrong road by the real estate agent.(You would think of all people they would know.) We went for detour drive on the way back from Arapiles. Looks like we found the right bridge this time. You drive down the Ballan road from Meredith and take the first sealed road on your right(slate quarry road). Then its 5km down the road.
Did not get time to climb today, but will let you know what we think when we climb..Maybe this weekend... Thanks for your help Mike...

Found the forum area stretch.... Yeah for sure, we will go this weekend, if the weather holds out. Should be no problem at all to find. And yeah, thanks for the directions Mike, nice web site......
