I guess it seemed as though I was joking about the type of people who consider themselves the sacred defenders of Araps. But sure enough, one of the chosen few couldnt resist the chance to defend the faith.
Of course no one but the select few who live near Araps could possibly have any relevant input into access issues...Lets have a look at an example of how they work to protect the interests of all climbers.
A few years ago, the proposal of a food van making daily rounds through the pines was suggested. Such a service would benefit climbers who cannot travel into Natimuk or Horsham for such basics as milk, bread, etc. The proposal was subject to many protests from Natimuk-based climbers because it would give Araps that little nudge down the slippery slope of commercialization. Thus, the proposal was rejected.
Perhaps I am a bit slow, but does this not sound like a good idea? If the service was not useful, would it not be ignored by those who stay in the pines, resulting in it being withdrawn? And what is so damaging about a vehicle driving through the pines twice or so a day?
Arguments seem to be thin on the ground from these people. But they seemingly have an abundance of paternalistic arrogance, the same that they bitch and moan about when dealing with other groups (eg. regulatory bodies like Parks). And I wont even start on the issue of the toilet (the one in the gums), which took on all the proportions and vigour of a war crimes trial.
There are other climbers who utilise Araps, and their concerns need to given consideration. Waht's so bad about the caravan park idea? Well, I guess that it would be an eyesore for those who live in Natimuk as they drive by the Pines everyday.
Even more disturbing is the racial vilification that is taking place at Araps courtesy of these people. Im sure you know what I'm talking about...Those signs that depict a dark-skinned person walking with a helmet and a rope, with one of those big crosses through him! I was disgusted, and as I walked past the sign I wondered how they could justify not letting black people walk along these paths...
At least in the burbs we dont care about things like that.
