Climbing in Victor Harbour?

Hi everyone,

I will in Victor Harbour in early January and have seen sketchy reports that some climbing might be available. I suspect that it will be on sea cliffs somewhere as I've seen websites promoting those things that drop out of the sky onto climbers (i.e. absielers).

Any ideas/links/guidebooks?

There is climbing on the granite cliffs around Victor Harbor. Covered in a guidebook to climbing around Adelaide published mid-late 80's. Don't know if there is anything more current...

If you can't source a copy, I can copy the relevant pages and send them to you.

There's climbing at The Bluff, Waitpinga and Cape Willoughby around Victor Harbour. Those areas are covered in The Adelaide Hills: A rock Climber's Guide by Nick Neagle and published in 1997. Probably still available from the Adelaide gear shops, give them a call.

Waitpinga is currently off limits as it has come under the management of NPWS, and access is dependent on a policy being implemented. This is on the way, but may not be in place by Janurary.

There's plenty of climbing on the bluff, on coarse granite. Mainly slabs, but also crack lines.

Most of the details are in the Adelaide Hills guide book, but there are also a number of new routes and rebolted routes around. Try searching the internet for details, I'm not sure of them. I think there are also routes on Granite Island now, but again am not sure of the details.

check out the pictures of Steve Kelly repeating Hopes in Slopes at http://www.climbingclubsouthaustralia.asn.au/snapshots.html to see what some of the more scary slabs at the bluff look like.
