General Climbing Discussion

A recent visit to the local gym made me wonder how many other people are both bemused and intolerant of the following:

- Beta. I just dont understand the concept at all. How do people feel that they have achieved something (like climbed somthing) when they needed help to do it? Why not just have a spotter give you a bit of helping hand when it gets too hard? I have no problem with teaching people how to do a move that they have never done before, which is not a form of beta. Worst of all is unsolicited beta from someone who is stronger and has been climbing longer. Their effort at 'helping out' just becomes an opportunity for them to show you what they can do and what you cant. Next time it happens the sound of large hex hitting scull will echo throughout the gym.

- The guys who take their shirts off when it is about 15 degrees and damn cold. However, said persons dont forget the fashionable beanie / bandana / groomed facial hair. What happened to the climbing scene? Just like the 'counter-culture' that was surfing, climbing fashion has been upstaged by marketing and egotistical knobs. Does anyone remember when the term 'climbing fashion' would have been a cue to laugh incessantly? I guess I should have learnt by now, ostentatious wankers climb too.

- Music. Sometimes there seems to be a competition to play the most annoying and shithouse electronic music known to humanity.

I had better stop there, before I get started on individual targets...I think some bitching, controversy and general disorder has been missing from this forum for some time now. In closing, I would like to remark on a few of the other forum topics in recent times:
- Ben Cossey is a tool.
- There are probably two people who post here who are 'legends', not just popular.
- Araps needs a caravan park.
- If you need beta to do a climb, maybe you shouldnt be doing that climb. Figure it out for yourself.
