It's only open if you a commercial operation and profit from a public resource. Go figure.

While the majority of outfits currently participating in the trial opening of Summerday are commercial operators, at least one (The VCC) is not.

I've seen plenty of year 12 VCE outdoor ed kids being guided over the last few months over the wall of fools.
As above it is still closed to anyone else

Oh dear. So misleading Neil. Lots of discussions went into this. I'm gathering you are a bit bored at work and looking for a bite :)

Re opening date - nothing set as such. Hopefully after winter in time for the Spring climbing season. Summerday can only be opened when the rest of the surrounding areas which are accessible when Summerday is open, has enough regrowth. Rainfall etc etc will have a determining effect.

Cheers,
Tracey

No.

Parks is monitoring the area closely. Due to the heat of the fire in the area and the general lack of rain, recovery has been very slow on the northern side. We've had some rain in the last couple of weeks so hopefully this spring things start sprouting and after that there might be an opening.

Keep an eye on the VCC's events list though. There might be another trip coming up there at some stage.

Just showing my ignorance and this is not a criticism of parks Vic, but why does regrowth speed effect the closure of areas such as Summer Day valley and the Hollow Mt walking track, or are the closures related to current damage to track infrastructure? Is it to reduce off track excursions?

Once you open the area to the public you really have no control over where they go. Most people stay on the track most of the time. But they need to go to the toilet. Then they do walk off track. They will spread weeds. etc.

Most likely it is concern about off-track excursions. Once they open the Hollow Mt walking track it will open up access to Andersons and other "off-track" areas. If the vegetation hasn't reestablished then the human traffic may prevent it from recovering and worse still introduce fast growing weed species.

Had forgotten about the bouldering in the area.

It's not just the bouldering. Tribute Wall, Cut Lunch, Koalaquatsy, VD Land, etc are all off track excursions. Let alone whatever else people can suddenly see across the way that isn't currently an epic bush bash.

When the main development of SDV began it was fairly recently after a bushfire. The bush regrew where people were not walking. As the area grew in popularity people became concerned that the bush was being flattened by the feet of many climbers, this was not the case.
To reduce the number of tracks, branches/scrub etc were placed on some of the tracks to "guide" people, after the fires and before the regrowth you could see where you were going and knew which track to take. After the regrowth, when the bush was 3-4m high, it wasn't as easy to know where you were being taken by some of the tracks and 'duplicates' did exist.
