I remember being at expo '88 and there was some sort of bar hang challenge where you stood on a pressure mat and as soon as you lifted off it started the timer. I weighed 55 kg at the time and was climbing pretty hard and regularly. I got in the line, more out of curiosity and managed some how to get myself on the end of a group of about 10 NRL players.

The first few lasted only about 30 or 40 seconds and each time the next one lined up there was a lot more gung ho talking each effort up until someone cracked 45 seconds for the first time that day. By this time quite a crowd had gathered and was starting to cheer on each effort - but no one bettered 45 seconds.

Then it was my turn and they all gathered around with crossed arms to watch me. I was truly ready for the most humiliating experience of my life. I had no idea what was about to happen.

At forty seconds the crowd went silent. At two and a half minutes they were just about all calling out each second as it rolled over on the counter. I can't remember what I finished at, but I remember the burn and the shaking of my arms and shoulders as I slipped off the bar, and I remember the cheering and the foot stomping of the crowd - and the lack of NRL players.

Great moment that came as a total surprise.
