Marketing gimic. Can also increase the time that the boots take to dry out, by trapping moisture within the leather. As Andrew mentioned, the lining also wears out quickly.

However, you wouldn't believe the number of people that walk into a shop and want something (anything?) with gore-tex in it. Many's the time I would have liked to have a $2 gore-tex key-chain to give people to satisfy this desire, and then go ahead with working out what they needed rationally...

In terms of weight and flexibility, plastics are getting better. I have a pair of alphas which walk quite well. Whilst I don't have a pair of leathers to compare to, I have a pair of leather, and a pair of plastic tele boots. The plastics are lighter when dry, let alone when the leathers have been out for a while in wet snow.
