I spend my working week hanging from buildings, and I really notice the height difference in just a few extra storeys.
I wouldn't call it fear though, more of an exhileration.
If I sit there looking down visualising falling I get afraid of that.
I think if you're busy, ie climbing or working you won't have any fear, it's only when you actually stop and look down and think about falling.
