Climbing Gym in Seaford ? 13-May-2004 At 9:21:27 AM Plod

I have climbed regularly at Seaford now for about 6 years. I have also climbed at all of the other major gyms. It costs me $48 a month for membership at Seaford which entitles me to unlimited climbing. The walls in the gym are 6 to 7 metres in height and about 50 % of the space is given to overhanging walls as well as 2 short roofs. There is only one lead (3 or 4 climbs) in the gym with the remaining climbs on top rope. In addition to a the easier climbs there are a large number of climbs in the grades 18 to 25 range. If you are used to long routes then you may find these short routes are quite challenging for the grades.
What you don't get for $48 per month: Lattes and Focacias. Long climbs on jugs. Hi tech panels that look/feel like real rock. You won't see H.B, Garth or Martin climbing there (Unfortunately). People lined up waiting for climbs.
What you do get for your money: Good hot chocolate. Loads of short, technical top roped routes with an emphasis on powerful moves. A friendly atmosphere.
What you need to get the most out of the gym: An open mind and a willingness to overlook the appearence of the gym and just enjoy the challenging climbing.
Yes some of the holds have worn smooth from use and this makes the climbing more challenging. Yes the climbing resembles top roped bouldering. No there is not much at Seaford to challenge those of you who are on-sighting grade 26+. For the rest of us mortals there is more than enough to keep you climbing new routes for weeks.
I still enjoy visiting the bigger gyms but if you haven't climbed at Seaford then call in, spend your $10 and decide for yourself.
