At the moment they definitely do not stand on their own feet financially. No secret there and as an advocate I will happily support that statement.

But, the value of electricity now is artifically low; corps rarely pay for the coal they mine (our resources) and don't pay for their polution. So they are decreasing our environmental capital in exchange for their profits. A price on carbon pollution addresses this 'externality' by making heavy emitters pay for the amount they are reducing our environmental capital. Once that happens properly, yes, renewables will look cheap.
