Bought a sum as you can belay skinny ropes safely, and it would be very hard to thread the wrong way (major problems with gri gri). It is very easy to pay out rope safely as well. But have stop using it as it as it just shreds ropes and leaves bits chewed off all over the place when lowering. Bought when first released, maybe fixed/modified???? Met some dudes in Spain recently who reckoned some shops in Europe where refunding due to this. Have since gone back to gri gri and just treat it as a non-auto locking device. ie hand always on rope braking.

I can reccomend the Eddy for non-rope shredding and small rope diameter usage.

I recently got a Kong Ghost. It's essentially a Black Diamond Guide for less than half the price. Winner.

They have changed the SUM a bit since it was first released. Where the rope runs out at the top they have added a curved stailess steel rope notch. I am told that this helps with the rope-wearing factor of the device, although I have not yet used a new one.

Like some earlier posters on this thread I have migrated from sticht plates to Black Diamond ATC Guide (Autoblock). I like it better with the thin ropes used these days, although there is nothing wrong with the sticht plates on appropriate ropes. The control variability is good and gives a greater degree of flexibility regarding climbing with different ropes on any given day, eg when swapping partners at the cliffs.

I know that a lot of you guys have been climbing for a while and yet you use the relatively recently released auto-locking double (ATC guide) and single rope devices(sum, cinch, etc.).

Have two devices sitting at home. Both sticht plates (double 11's, & double nine's), though I usually carry my third sticht plate (an 11/9 combo) for gearless partners to belay me with!
