Finger tips

Lately after just a few climbs on the first day of the weekend my finger tips have been wearing through and become painful to climb on.
In the past I have been able to climb each weekend with no prob, even for weeks at a time.
But now they seem to wear through very quickly.

Has this happened to anyone else?
and does anyone have any advise on how to prevent it form continuing to happen

Hi Adam, I've found that red wine bwtween climbing days outdoors helps ..... I believe it's the anti-oxidants. Otherwise, just tougher up.

Yes, soak your fingertips in red wine, that'll help. Beats dishwashing liquid.

I used to row as a kid and we used to wee on our hands to harden them up. Worked. Its supposed to be
the alum that hardens them up. Or that is what the coach always told us. Wait a minute . . . school boys
in a huddle, weeing on their hands. What was I thinking? And yes, it was an all boys school.

I've been using a commercial product called Climb On, that's excellent. Good for repairing splits and flappers, and toughens it up for next time.

The Climb On Bar, for hands, Lip Lube for lips and nose in the cold, and the creme for on the job.

Chuck would be proud of you ...

"As we unloaded packs at the parking lot, two young ladies approached us to ask if we were THE Yosemite climbers... They asked if it were true that Yosemite climbers chafe their hands on the granite to enable them to friction up vertical walls. We assured them that the preposterous myth was true." — Chuck Pratt, 1965.

Super Glue is the cheapest method, just apply to the flapper/thin spot and hey presto in seconds you
have a new layer to climb on, at the end off the day just wash with nail polish remover to clean up.

I have used super glue a few times climbing on granite when I have run out of tips and it works pretty good. But a friend tried it out on Castle Hill limestone and apparantly it was like having teflon on your fingertips. So not so great on slopers.

Of course the most guaranteed solution would be to stop dogging the crap out of routes beyond your ability

I used to row for a while when I was at high school. Our rowing coach also told us about pissing on our hands to toughen them up. He also said we could use metho instead, which funnily enough ended up being the preferred option for most of the crew. A couple of guys went with the weeing on the hands method. I still wonder about those guys.

I took up cricket.

I agree with the red wine remedy. If you drink enough, you totally forget about your tips.

I only seem to have a problem with trashed tips when I boulder, so it's not a common problem for me.

Hey wall-y If I pee red wine on my belayer*, will it help heal the wall gobis on my hands?

(*tongue firmly in cheek, though apparently Chris Baxter did similar to his partner on the 1st ascent of Ozymandias).

Perhaps, but you also may end up with a few fist gobis on your melon.

Just stick to jugs and slopers - avoid crimpers. I'm always surprised how long I can climb for (ie 13 days straight in Europe) when i avoid crimpy climbing.
