G'day all,

I was recently bestowed with quite a large collection of climbing gear from a relative at the more accepting end of the post-midlife crisis spectrum.

I've done the generic indoor climb thing once or twice but realistically have no experience with climbing. It is however something I would like to take up, as I've always been an active individual and can't really walk away from a challenge.

Basically, I'd love to hear from anyone that would be willing to tolerate my three hundred and six questions and complete inexperience to get together and give me a bit of direction. I'd like to think I'm pretty good company, and if you're in the area, you may just have a climbing buddy soon enough.

I'm a 22 year old male, living north of Melbourne (near Seymour) with a Hilux and all necessary freedoms.

Hope to hear from someone soon!

Dylan

Hi Dylan,

If nobody gets back to you on here you have a few options as well that might be worth exploring.

1) if you're at uni see if there is an outdoor club you can join. Melbourne uni and Monash uni both have active clubs that head out climbing so that can be a good place to learn.

2) Join the Victorian Climbing Club (VCC). They have regular outdoors trips you can cut your teeth on and when you're ready they also run learn to lead courses .

3) Hang around at your local gym and try meet the regulars - often people don't mind a tag along on trips, especially if the tag along generously chips in for petrol/beer :) !

Goodluck!

You missed one - Have a sex change. Single women on this site seem to have better luck finding people to go climbing.

Sensational, thank you. I was unaware of those options. VCC might be the way to go. I am after all, particularly fond of my appendages.

Highly recommend Rockclimbing - Getting Started by Glen Tempest, I keep going back to it as I learn.

Surf this stuff to start to get your head around climbing, so when you get out on rock it begins to make sense, takes a while though.

Cams can plug into many places around the house both inside and out also. Plugging gear in and building equalised anchors need not rock. As wise Jisoe would say 'new shoes make you feel new, y'know. Thats why you cant have too many Nikes' You have an old used rack, that already equates to having some knowledge even if you know nothing. So go fourth and plug up those crevices between fridge and wall with your ones twos threes and mores. An outdoor educator once told me to remember an acronym 'KISD' (keep it simple, dumbass). That might help too. No problems, glad to be of use. Cheers

If there is an actual book you'd like to read, buy whatever the latest versions is of "Mountaineering; the freedom of the hills."

Dylan,

What sort of gear did you inherit? Are you interested in trad climbing or sport climbing?

If it's trad climbing you're after, I'm willing to spend a few hours to help out a motivated individual. I teach people to lead and place gear in my backyard all the time. I've got various trees you can lead and bluestone walls to show you how to place gear. I live in Alphington.

I recently gave an instructional to my neighbor and he's on the search for a trad partner so you'd be in luck there as well.

If you're coming in from Seymour I'd ask if you were able to bring me a few guinea fowl from a friend in Wallan.

Hey everyone,

Went AWOL for a while there, sorry. I heard back from a handful of people via PM's and went off on a few climbs and haven't been online since.

Thanks for all the info and replies, you've all been a big help. I'll be in contact shortly to arrange a few more meet ups, hopefully!

Deej
