I am attending a wedding on the 7th of January and would like to get some climbing in after. I will be in the Melbourne area until the 14th, though am considering finding a way out to Mt. Arapiles. Having a parter lined up beforehand would be appreciated. I am a confident trad leader on 5.8 in Yosemite, so I think that translates to 16 over there. I can bring protection if needed, however I would rather not carry along all the extra gear. More than anything I am just looking to get on some rock that is not covered in ice and snow. Also, if it makes a difference I am a 26 year old University student.
Cheers!
Thomas

If you're confident leading 5.8 in Yosemite you should be fine to at least grade 18 at Araps, once you've got a handle on the rock & pro. Hopefully someone will pipe up and offer to show you around but even if they don't I'd suggest heading out there anyway - the climbing is superb and you'll probably be able to partner up with other climbers once you're there.

Good luck!

rent a car and go there. you WILL find partners, and it does happen to be the best trad cliff in the world.
It will be hot though.

Yeah, best trad cliff in the world. I bet I'll still be stuck around here by January. Send another post around then. Yep,you will find people to climb with easily at your grade. If I'm still here , I'll be cruising up grade 20 by then. Keep me posted

I will just head out there and try to find a partner since that seems to be the best. I think I will leave my rack and rope at home in this case since I am planning on backpacking in NZ the week after. By the way, since I am coming from the states is there anything I should bring to convince people to drag me along? Things like hard to get alcohol or a 'merica t-shirt.

Aussies are quite conservative. Holaring drugs and hookers for a bit of a tug probably won't work. Rather sad really.

A well desribed view of vision and how bad the rest of the world has it will work.

Yup, twinkies, ding-dongs and ho-ho's.... Drop me a line when it's closer to your arrival to see if we can organize something.

Just make sure your luggage doesn't get too badly shaken during transit - it'd be unfortunate to start the trip with your ding dong ending up in a ho-ho.

You heard that hostess is out of business and there's no more twinkies?

Alright, I am here in Geelong and am planning on heading out there on the morning of the 8th. Is anyone heading out and looking for a partner? By the way, the price of beer here is outrageous!
Thanks Guys!

No, the price of hard liquor here is outrageous. The price of beer is merely mildly horrendous. If you really want to feel good about living in the States then check out the price of climbing gear here.

Sadly I'm not in a position to climb with you, hope you have a blast.
