Asses Ears and Wallaby Rocks Road closures

Hi All,

Unfortunately due to the heavy rains that we have had recently there has quite a lot of damage to Asses Ears and Wallaby Rocks Road, resulting in their complete closure. See attached pics. Due to the lack of groundcover regrowth in that particular area I would also imagine the tracks themselves would be in a sorry state. This was one of the fears when we eventually did get rain. There are also numerous other temporary road closures due to similar damage and fallen trees, but these particular areas were some of the worst.

as of Betty Windsor birthday weekend, Asses ears road is basically OK along its entire length, serious damage must be on wallaby rocks road. the worst on asses ears road is sand over the road.
Access to asses ears not too ecologically violent. the first part is an old vehicular gash with run off bumps but then please try to follow the cairns, otherwise there'll be tracks everywhere.
BTW if you haven't climbed at asses ears main face, have a ramble up the descent chasm/chimney first. by far the easiset way to find where it starts and if you get the start wrong, there are some fairly hairy possibilities.

how is the regrowth along the base of the cliff and in the descent gully? I think it was pretty hot in the fire and then there were months of drought ...

Lots of trees have re-awakend and are in the full tilt of growth.

Thanks Neil, but I was wondering specifically about how the base of the cliff and the descent gully were recovering - that's where the climbers' impact will be greatest.

Anyone got any pics of those areas - the one's I saw from last spring were amazingly bare...

After making some further enquiries with Parks re the state of Asses Ears Road/Wallaby Rocks Road....Asses Ears Road still has sections of severe damage where there are 1.3m deep drop-offs and therefore classed as impassable. It is still closed between Mt. Victory and Schmitts Road. Wallaby Rocks Road is also closed. In case you are not aware, Asses Ears Track and the cliff is still officially closed and in a FAA. Besides giving the area, especially groundcover, some much needed time to recover, there is still quite a lot of tree risk work that needs to be done to make it safe, before checking and possibly re-aligning some of the tracks.

Asses Ears Road and Wallaby Rocks Road are now both open. There has been significant water damage, especially Asses Ears Road so the surfaces are rough and care should be taken. Warning signs have been erected.
