Hi y'all,
Anyone have suggestions for how much rack to take for a Spanish road-trip? Destinations are: Montserrat, Cavallers, Riglos, Villanova de Meia.
Yes it's a sport-climbing Mecca but I've heard little bits of trad are needed at Montserrat and VdM "between the bolts". Cavallers seems to have enough bolted routes to not bother, although there's some tempting multipitch further up the valley. The main routes at Riglos seem to be all bolted well enough.
Current thinking is a small rack of (say) 8 wires and 6 cams, mainly driven by Montserrat recommendations. Any suggestions?

I wouldn't bother with a rack for VdM or Montserrat, there's not many routes at either where trad gear is obligatory. Just a few run outs on old school routes.
But Cavellers and surrounds has enough awesome cracks to make a rack worthwhile.

Don't worry about a rack, gfdonc - just take some cement and harden up!

Yeah catch with that one is I'd have to take the lot, which I'm hoping to avoid.

For much of the climbing in Spain you might only place 1 cam. The trick is knowing which cam. Some of the multis can be sparsely bolted and the odd bit of gear comes in handy. I would not take a mega rack as there is enough that can be done without the full rack. In my several trips I don't think I placed any wires but I have not climbed at Montserrat.

The Monserrat guide has a number of vague indications about taking a few things, such as: a few odd wires, cams, small loops of cord in varying thicknesses for tie-offs, a skyhook or two and even some 'keyhole hangers for hangerless bolts'!
These are interspersed with extremely specific items on some routes such as "a grey Alien".

Memory's a bit hazy but I don't think there was any need for trad gear at Riglos.
