Gonna be in Sydney town this Sunday in the sizzling heat.

Which are the shadiest, coolest, best crags to climb?

The sea cliffs.
Or Norway.

Sydney hot? Try Araps as it is cooler there than the Gramps which are burning hot.

No, really, a crag near water is your best option. The Dam Cliffs in the Bluies, or some place like Barrenjoey on the coast, unless you want to try one of mikls recent coastal retros, though I hear he isn't too confident about them and has skipped town to Perth as a consequence recently.

If you are after actual SYDNEY crags there are a couple of options in the Sutherland Shire (about 20km south of the CBD).

Cathedral - Large (30m), gritty, cracks, faces, slabs, lots of bolts. A bit old school in style. All day shade.

Lost World - only 3 routes of worth (22, 23, 24) but they are really fun and quite high for Sydney (18m). Morning until mid afternoon shade.

Lucas Heights - Steep sport between 22-25. Lots of bolts. ALL day shade.

Bangor - Short (8m) Gritstony crag with lots of easier grades. Some bolts, some trad. Int he same region as the above crags so easily combined. All day shade.

All these crags are located above a nice river, reasonably cool. Us locals have been climbign there all month and it is very pleasant. Drought is good! No seepage or humidity! And much less mosquitoes then a usual summer (still - bring mozzie repellant.)

Sydney Sea Cliffs are fun in the afternoon (they face generally east - so forget about them until the afternoon). Rock is pretty appalling quality by most standards but the atmosphere is pretty cool.

The Cathedral is great for summer. Early mornings are blissfully cool and the whole crag stays shaded all day. It's also unusually dry there at the moment. Even the eternal wet patch on Buffalo Bum is gone, so its an easy tick right now.

The junkyard in Campbelltown is in the shade all day. We were there today and it was great. Only just off the M5 too, so isnt too much of a mission from elsewhere in Sydney

Narrabeen Slabs is south facing. But watch for ticks, and it will still be sweaty if it's mega humid.
