I wouldn't normally post retail spam, but MD are having a 4-day sale with what looks like genuine 30% off all climbing hardware - nationwide and online, see http://www.mountaindesigns.com/store/equipment/climbing-gear if you are interested

They currently have run out of Xmas sale, with some good deals on a range of Mammut 60m ropes at $149, other climbing gear similarly discounted by 50-60%

They don't appear to charge shipping on ropes either...

Wow thanks for that, there are some super cheap ropes there. Is it worth the extra money to get the dry treatment if you're only using the rope for cragging?

Edit: don't worry I bought the dry for $50 more. Ahhhhh the sweet surge of shopping endorphins.

I don't like dry treatments on my ropes much. Weird waxy feeling to them sometimes and I don't often climb when it's wet so it seems like a waste of money most of the time.

Bi-pattern on my single is good when out doing trad, but I can't rationalise the expense at the moment. Less useful when sport climbing other than to keep track of which end has been thrashed on a given day or perhaps giving you a heads up that lowering someone off might not end well. Bi-pattern on doubles seems silly as I almost never try to find the middle of those.

Yes, I think dry treatment is good for alpine climbers, but not so useful for Australian conditions. I'd love bicolour ropes, but have only ever found them at full (eye-watering) price.

I bought a Mammut Fusion 9.4 single/double/twin rated rope, which is the nicest rope I've ever had (current version is 9.3). I really like the versatility of triple rated ropes, and my next rope will be a 70m triple rated rope, when I can find one on sale. All these ones seem to be 60m unfortunately.

I would have preferred a 70m but $200 is an offer I can't refuse. I was looking a Sterling Helix 9.5 70 but that costs about $400 after my discount!

I'm going to China in a couple of months and wanted to get a new rope for the trip. I'm not planning on using it too much in the Bluies (sport climbing mainly) because of the rope wear so hopefully the length won't be an issue. Apparently the dry treatment really helps with rope wear compared to the untreated rope so it should make it a little more durable.

I have a 9.2 sterling evolution aero which is still my favourite rope, but I only use it a Arapiles because it would get trashed in a session Blue Mountains sport climbing :)
