Tony, great to have you back - I remain impressed at the determination, perseverance and single mindedness that you have shown. Your arguments are spurious, evidence non-existent and references bizarre - but you do remind me of the importance to get off my arse and make sure that simple minded people don't get things all their own way. Wow, that's a compelling statistic. Last time I was in Melbourne there was record breaking rain and hail as well.

I got burnt pretty badly at work commenting on some of this stuff. Wrote a comment that was picked up by Crikey, then run with my job title. BIG PROBLEM. Apparently the Minister was personally unhappy with me. So, I've got all sorts of problems with renewable energy policy, but I can't share them.

One thing I will say is that any announcement that does not involve a price on carbon will only ever be a stop gap for renewables and energy in general. Plenty of research supports this idea.

I only found this because my blog got a spike in views yesterday, because of that link up the page. Hilarious.

I've also not tied in since February, so been a bit reluctant to show my face around here. DM me if you want an off the record opinion.

the 1kw pv system on my mother inlaws will be fully paid back within 12 months maybe 9 if they hurry up with upping the feedback from 23.5 to 66 cents . Our 5 kw system (1kw private use 4kw business ) will have the private portion paid off by next june and the business in about 5 years .The first 12 months were on 23.5 cents feed back but since december on 66 cents . Since put in we have bought 50000kwh ,produced 12000kwhs of which 4800kwhs were fed back . our system cost $36000 and could now be done for between $18 and 19 thousand . paybacks would only be a few years . Metering and connection to the grid now cost $212 pa then you add power ! Smart meters will also increase consumption costs as peak will increase greatly in price

Not sure that smart meters necessarily imply Time-Of-Use metering charges will be applied. Sure, they will allow those charges to be calculated, but I'm not aware of any proposals to meter residential customers in this way, it would be very complex for a retailer to manage. It would also be grossly unpopular.

None of this means that I don't think it's a good idea either.

Fortunately the world is at last coming to its senses about the global warming scam. The startling revelations of Climategate were the last nail in its coffin. US, Canada and France have opted out of Cancun later this month, where an international climate-change deal is supposed to be attempted. China and India were out in any practical sense long ago. The Chicago Climate Exchange is also dead after the price of carbon fell to zero.

However, Australia and NZ remain the home of green stupidity. Hopefully Labor will come to its senses, forget about new taxes and get the focus back to real issues such as Oz being the world leader in species loss, or the continuing massive destruction of native bushland. Of course new taxes are much easier for pollies and our masses were even stupid enough to elect a government because they promised a new tax (GST).
