Now that people are talking climbing here, so many young people ask 'What is the correct belay technique?' and the answer usually involves complicated stuff- it's the three position technique- or never let go the brake hand- or give them extra rope so the fall is dynamic. Well I have developed a simple self belay technique that you should easily grasp from the following image. Perfect for rope solo and with another knot and turn equally good for the normal belay use. Look and learn!

OZONE WITH ICE

Blame the southern ozone hole. That's why Antarctic sea ice is growing even though Arctic ice is shrinking at record rates. It seems CFCs and other ozone depleting chemicals in the atmosphere have given the South Pole a respite from global warming.

Satellite images studied by John Turner of the British Antarctic Survey and his colleagues show that Antarctic sea ice increases in every month except January. "We're trying to understand why it's increasing now, at a time of global warming," says Turner.

The researchers used an atmospheric model to investigate how the ozone hole has changed weather patterns around Antarctica. They found that depletion of ozone has intensified strong winds that swirl around the continent. This vortex has drawn more warm air in from Chile, which has warmed the Antarctic peninsula and may have contributed to the collapse of several ice shelves. However, it has also generated stronger cool-air storms around the Ross Sea, where new ice has formed. Overall, the increase in sea ice has been greater than the reduction (Geophysical Research Letters, DOI: 10.1029/2009GL037524 in press).

The respite is temporary, though. The ozone hole will eventually close, Turner says. "In the next decade or so we should see sea ice plateauing and then decreasing massively."

Then again, they could just be wrong I suppose.

You better check Arctic ice again. It's been at normal area for the past 8 months. They found that their satellite recorder was faulty, and had to adjust their data back into last year. If anything, it's recovering at a record rate. http://arctic-roos.org/observations/satellite-data/sea-ice/ice-area-and-extent-in-arctic

What? How can you look at those graphs and declare that it's recovering at a record rate?

?

because its higher than the record low in 2007 its "recovering at a record rate"? it hasn't even reached a low point yet, and is still -1SD of the 1979-2007 records. sounds like you want it to be a record increase, not because there's any convincing data to go by

Two ways - Firstly, the ice area increase between 2007 and 2009 exceeds increases in the recorded past, and secondly, that's what the scientists are telling us.
