Andrew Lock OAM

We are very lucky to have Andrew Lock flying in to speak at Adventure Time.

Andrew is a well-known Australian adventurer par excellence.

He’s also a great bloke, with a humble attitude, a straight-shooting manner, amazing mental and physical toughness who knows how to spin a good yarn.

Andrew is going to take us on a personal journey of how he evolved from a young cross-country skier and bushwalker into an experienced himalayan mountaineer who has, amongst other things:

- Climbed the 14 highest mountains in the world (all over 8000m tall)*
- Rescued numerous people above 8000m
- Survived some extremely tough bivouacs such as one on Shishapangma that involved sitting on his pack in the dark out in the open in -30 degrees over 7600m for 10 hours
- Climbed most of these mountains solo, without oxygen, and with very little support
- Guided in Antarctica

With a record like this you might be tempted to think he’s a big-risk taker, but that's not really the case.... for he has evolved a whole bag of unique skills, techniques and attitudes that have made these sorts of endeavours not only possible, but relatively safe as well. (He attempted Shishapangma 5 times, getting agonisingly close to the top on several occasions before finally making it to the very highest point)

Greg Mortimer (another living national treasure who has spoken at Adventure Time) has described Andrew as a “master of thin air”.

After an epic 16 years achieving the above he is almost ready to hang up his boots as a high-altitude mountaineer, but that doesn’t mean he’s slowing down - His next expedition has nothing to do with high mountains but will amaze (and possibly even terrify) you..... until you realise that if anyone can do it Andrew can.

Dr Rebecca Hamilton

Rebecca Hamilton is a geographer based at the University of Sydney. Her work focusses reconstructing dry tropical forest response to climatic extremes using lake sediments in Cambodia.

When not conducting field work in Southeast Asia or lecturing at Sydney uni and ACU, Bec is an avid hiker, formed NPWS volunteer guide and long time attendee of Adventure Time. Her passion for the natural environment has led her to explore ecosystems throughout Australia and the world.

In her talk, Bec will be sharing with us the geological secrets of the Sydney Basin. She’ll give us insights into the formation and evolution of the cliffs we climb, canyons we traverse, ridge lines we hike, and what makes our backyard so unique. You’ll never look at rocks the same way again!
