Hello climbing community!
I live in a short swim away and am coming over to visit my brother who is living in Dunkeld. While I have made a couple of trips to arapilies (about 5 weeks total) in my pre children days I'm looking for any tips on where to climb with my young daughter and neice. While the Grampians are close to where we will be it all looks pretty hard. Any real basic child friendly top rope areas anyone can reccomend?
Cheers for any help
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
I am a Dunkeld resident. The closest and best top roping to Dunkeld is the Mt Lion, which is a 25 minute drive if you go via the back roads. Great grade range in the Vanya Wall area - it is in the back of the updated Mentz/Tempest Selected guide. Make sure you grab a latte from the general store before you head off ;)
Cheers,
Jimmy

If you head down to the Halls Gap end at any time [about 40 mins of straight road away] you should check out www.thecrag.com in particular the Halls Gap Area Town Cliffs and Wonderland. http://www.thecrag.com/climbing/australia/grampians/halls-gap-area There are a number of short accessible cliffs in those areas suitable for top roping. You could try Labour Ward at http://www.thecrag.com/climbing/australia/grampians/town-cliffs/area/872806533 if you want really basic with bolt protection and lower offs. It's within walking distance of the cafes and ice cream shop! You can contact me via email if you want further info on suitable cliffs around the Halls Gap end.

In case you feel like revisiting Araps, I used to take nieces and nephews up Sunny Gulley on the front of Dec crag when they were little tackers, then bushrangers bluff when they got a bit bigger
