Ropes on Passport

I was talking to some people in Natimuk tonight (5/5/2003) who have been walking in the Fortress area over the last few days. They reported seeing a number of ropes (I'm not clear whether just two or more than two) hanging down Passport, one of which apeared frayed and caught in a tree and another which appeared not to reach the ground.
The details are vague but they were clear that these ropes looked odd.
Can anyone shed any light on this
Kieran

When I aided passport about 3 years ago there were two fixed ropes at the end of the second pitch which were attached to something way down and around to the right. We tried to pull them up but they were stuck on something (tree?). They were brand new then. A 60m does not reach the ground form the end of the second pitch so they must have tried swinging to the side to get down.

That fits. The description I got suggested that the ropes had been there for some time.
I've had friends who have abseiled from the ledge above the overhang in bad weather and a 50m abseil has landed them in a tree. A tip here is that the first person down should not let go of the rope ends unless you want the two members of the party stranded on different limbs of the tree 10m off the ground.
It would be good if the people who left the ropes could recover them. It sounds like they are an eyesore.

A friend of mine got a rope snagged in trees there 3 or 4 years ago. I thought she went back to retrieve it. If I see her I'll get some more detail on how it happened.

Robin, That seems to fit the time-frame. It sounds like few people have bothered with Passport since Lynn Hill repeated it. To see it festooned with frayed ropes is quite sad.

I know of at least two euros who have had a crack at the free version. Niether was succesful. I imagine it still gets a little traffic - just not the same amount as D Minor!

And after 10 years, there's still a rope caught on the east side.

Not in the same league, but I'm fairly sure the very visible piece of tat above Traverse of the Gods DS at Piddington has been there since the last time I was there (and quite probably the first time!). That's at least 15 years, and while it's white I have a feeling it always was. Nylon can take a long time to degrade.
