Hey Nick,
The only reason I reckon all these internet sites (thecrag, chockstone, cragx, etc) are so popular is we are stuck at work and cant climb and these are the next best thing to climbing while we are stuck at work. The real climbers do not get on the net cause they are out climbing. Check on how many people post on weekends - not much.
So - I dont think climbing has lost much.
P.S. I love cheesecakes.

Allow me to introduce myself
Retired climber cum property developer, fisherman and shooter. Sitting at home recovering from a hip replacement. I just had the internet set up at home to pass the time. I spend weekends doing up my fishing boat "La Scala" and going fishing. Trying to give up smoking, love my beer.
With the drought on I am also doing my bit to cull the roo and fox populations with my 303. I am looking at property developments around Victoria and I am getting around most of the major websites (water-skiing, trail-biking, climbing and mountain-biking) to get a feel for the target population. I am also talking to the local councils.

I think you're being a tad dramatic. I don't think you need to worry about that sort of stuff too much.
But to follow you into the discussion nonethless - I think all boundaries of climbing are being pushed at the moment - free, trad, solo, womanizing, speed solo etc. People are still doing insanely bold things right at the forefront of technical difficulty
Names?
Tommy Caldwell, Dean Potter, Lindblade/Whimp, Tomo Cesen, Chris Sharma, Chris Webb, Monique Forestier, Sam Berry, Alesandre Chabot, Neil Bentley, Yuji Hirayama, Huber brothers, Hans Florine, Steve Schnieder, Steve McClure plus many more.
I think climbing's future is safe in their and our hands.
I think that the womanizing is still strong in climbing - as Seinfeld put it "Why did we climb Everest, expore the far ends of the Earth, fly to the moon?"

'best climbers in the world' is pretty subjective
The ability to climb something above grade 30, technical difficult and less than 30 metres in height is not the criteria I would use.
Their is so much more to climbing than this

Sure thing jh, but using that criteria is a pretty good start eh?

Tasch I've got him, he is formerly "Woozer". He has since had a name change and a makeover. I know who this guy is, I worked with him once.

dear god! waiter! 'nuther cheesecake if ya will
>Venez les amis, juste un peu d'amusement! Damo I savent qui vous êtes. Est-ce que je peux dire chacun ?
my translation may be a little rough, but from what i know of the language this pretty much says, 'damo was an amusing hampster and your father smelt of 13 yearold female gymnasts'
no wonder noone likes the french....
>30
this seems to be the repetitive number. hell yeh its hard, but if we're talking about the best in the world, 30 is a long way from it.
>Trad will be (is) dead??
comeon, give us a farken break...
>Anyway, what does the future of climbing hold
probably something cylindrical if the internet is any indication. but since (i hope) it doesnt, probably something very small and sharp, a long way above a manky #1 rp
>Will it follow gymnastics?
did anyone see that dude on masters of stone that set up rings off the side of a cliff?
gymnastics is about routine and lots of f---ing strength, but the sole point of it is competition. as we've all heard before, there really isnt a point to climbing, so obviously some people are going to start trying to make it 'worth their while' and base it on holding smaller stuff than the person next to you. the motivation to climb is a personally derived thing, so for some people yes it will follow gymnastics. for others (myself included) it will be about movement over rock, doing stuff you never thought you could, shaking legs, placements that wobble out when you're 8m above them, justification for living like a bum, laughing at all the guys/girls sitting behind a computer all day (funnily enough, right now so am i- but im not getting paid nearly as much) ,and having a sick time with your mates.....amoung other things
>The best climbers in the world in the future will probably be 13 year old girls....
and then 5 years after that they'll be 18 year old girls....wont that be a shitesight better?

Maybe for you, but that's still about 50 years too young for the rest of us. And the way that French wanker is going on this forum, there will be no babes left in climbing anyway.
I would like to see a more sensitive, mature and considered approach
