I heard today of an option for free firewood in Horsham. Can't vouch for how suitable it is and not much use for weekenders.
Westonvic Waste Horsham has lots of broken pallets that they chop up and then chip. People are welcome to pick the broken stuff up for firewood. Might be worth a look if you're in town on a shopping trip with an empty boot.
They're at 8 Turnbull Dr, Horsham but only open during the week. 7am-4pm Mon-Thu, 6am-3pm Fri.

Bunnings often has a pile of broken pallets the right of the door to the wood shed with "free wood" written on it. Again, no idea how suitable any of it is for burning. I'd guess a lot of it is treated.

If you try out the Westonvic option please check with them to make sure that anything you get is untreated wood.
