Damn, yet another good rumour foiled by the truth. Damn you Deadpoint. ;-)

For those interested, there is a 'Master Mate' and a 'Pirate Willy', but no Master Bates or Seaman Stains.

A classic from Mark Moorhead quoted in the '83 Arapiles guide.
"Ethics are like the wind, here today, gone tomorrow."

Great thread by the way!

Amendment to last quote:
"Ethics are like the weather; here today, gone tomorrow."
Cheers Hex

Another one:

"We are Psychotic. We need help."

Attributed to Johnny Dawes or Paul Pritchard after the 1st ascent of the route 'Come to Mother' E7 6a at Gogarth. The entire route fell into the Irish Sea a few months later apparently!

"... the most satisfying way of climbing (for me) is ground up, placing all your pro. That's where the excitement comes in. That's where you're really tested. You've got to work out the move under the pressure of falling off".

Success and failure feel less important, and the process of trying becomes a lot more fun.

“Climbing is good because it is not like tennis,” says Rouhling. “If I practice tennis for the next year it does not matter how good I become, because there is almost no chance that I can go and play against the best tennis players like Pete Sampras. But climbing is different. Tomorrow I can go and get on Realization if I like. The hardest routes are always there and anyone can go and try them as they like. ... So when people say things about me, it is OK. Because no matter what they say about me, the routes are still there, and if they like they can go and try them.”

~"The fact that I value more moments than others tells me that what I thought was important (this is hard, this will make me famous) isn't important, and what is important is the elusive mix of all the strands of the time:- The place, people, sky, moves, fear.

I've had great days when I've barely ticked, but enjoyed and still remember. Conversely I've struggled up harder things that, a few years on, I can't even remember if i did them or not.

On a slightly different note, many people who get good at climbing, start to like being a good climber more than they love climbing. When they aren'tt climbing that well, they stop climbing, poor blokes."~
