AUC Rockclimbing 2004 - July 10th/11th

Just to let all you university climbers out there know that the Australian University Championships Rockclimbing is being held down in Melbourne this year, hosted by La Trobe University. The comp will be on the weekend of 10th - 11th July, which is one of the weekends that almost all Uni's have in common for holidays - so it's a good excuse to come down and climb at Arapiles (or the Grampians ... or even that must-visit granite super-crag, the You Yangs).

On Saturday 10th July, there will be an onsight technical climbing competition held at the Cliffhanger climbing gym in Altona. And on Sunday, there'll be a pump-fest style bouldering competition at Vic Ranges gym in Flemington - yes, for the first time in years you'll actually have the chance to compete in AUC bouldering - hoorah!

do you have to be a member of a uni club to compete or just be going to uni?

You just need to be enrolled as a student at a university. Talk to your sports union about entry. (most universities will cover entry cost and subsidise transport etc to AUC events).

Probably, my last uni semester as a student was the first half of last year and I was just able to compete in the AUC which was in the middle that year. I believe you are usually able to compete in AUC events up until August.
Heres the Eligibility Rules (pdf).

any idea of the standdards of the beginner, intermediate, open, catergories?

From memory, for the climbing it's something like:
Beginner Female: up to 16
Beginner Male: up to 18
Intermediate Female: 17 - 21
Intermediate Male: 19 - 23
Advanced Female: 22+
Advanced Male: 24+

Hey Joe,

You don't have to be part of a club, just a current student. Your uni will probably have a set process for participating in an AUC event.

I seem to recall that you were an RMIT student - am I remembering correctly? Two years ago I took a team up to Newcastle when the AUc event was on up there. We had a great time. I am interested in liasing with sport and rec again to set up a team for this event. In fact I might drop in tomorrow morning. The outdoors club will probably have lots of interested people also. Email me know if you are interested.

(the granite is the name of the trophy for the winning uni)

What stories? You mean playing top gun while you climbed your way into thrid place? Or do you mean the road trip with the infamous 'blame hour' and 'praise hour'? Ah, memories!

How is Mexico these days? Say hi to Rosea from me.

As for the money, if we could work out the amount then I am happy to give it to you.

Hmm, sounds inviting! Anywhere else near Melbourne that would be good for a day trip/overnight trip with a bunch of climbers with various experience levels?

Hey, it's not always that bad at Araps in Winter! I've had a few really nice Winter trips there - sunny days, no wind, and just cool enough that the rock was nice to climb on, without being so cold that you had trouble making your hands do anything. And there's hardly anyone else there, so you can always get on the climbs you want. You can be unlucky with the weather though, and the days _are_ too short :(

Thats right Meags! We had a great winter trip there last lear. It is fairly rare that it rains all day and you cant get a climb in, usuallly rain comes in the form of passing showers, and allows time for single pitch etc. But it is still usually clear, and less windy than in summer.

Lets go eat some pie (megan will understand)
