Not a climbing accident but a bit close to home. A walker's leg needed to be amputated after being trapped for three days. Similarities to the accident up in Queensland some years back. Though this guy was walking as part of a religious cleansing festival - perhaps there's a message for him in this.
The link below is to an Afrikaans report and the google translation is below.

A man's leg was amputated after three days stuck in a narrow rock crevice in the Rustenburg Kloof.

Rescuers battled for three days to Tsenolo Shadrack Rasello (26) freed after his right foot in the cliffs landed.

It was after three days no other way more than Rasello, a resident of Phokeng near Rustenburg,'s right leg below the knee to amputate the arm.

Prof. Frank Plani, a trauma surgeon at the Chris Hani-

Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, and two anesthetists is 11:30 yesterday morning with helicopters taken up, leaving them with ropes lowered to where Rasello trapped.

Rob Thomas, a member of the search and rescue team from the Mountain Club of South Africa, had the doctors over the edge and crawl away to where afreik Rasello half standing, and to get on.

Within 45 minutes, his right leg amputated below the knee, then Rasello to a higher ledge and hoisted to the waiting ambulance brought.

Plani, who was born in Italy, is the head of disaster management in Chris Hani Baragwanath's surgery department.

Thomas yesterday afternoon said it was the most difficult rescue in which he has ever been involved. He is since 1994 member of the club.

The rescue especially difficult, was very loose, unstable rocks around Rasello.

"If we were only 20 tons of rocks

2 cm would move, could it (Rasello) crushed. "

Apart from Rasello's life was in danger, the rescue workers's.

The area where Rasello trapped were difficult to reach.

"I do not know how he ended up tearing it. He said he had a snake startled and shut case. Its momentum in the fall had his foot between two rocks forced. "

Thomas was Rasello between 70 and 80 m from the top of the gorge in the tear caught.

He was half standing with his right foot to below the knee between the rocks.

There were only small impakbore his leg drilled, which is trying to kill him with a pulley system from the fracture haul. It failed.

Thomas said rescuers also pulled his shoelaces in the hope of him getting out there.

"The shoelaces broke his leg and did not want to move. That bone did not want out. "

Even baby oil is used to free Rasello, but nothing would do.

Mynreddingspanne rock and experts from neighboring mines, including Lonmin and Impala's help when called.

" THE SHOELACES BROKE HIS LEG AND DID NOT WANT TO MOVE. THAT BONE DID NOT WANT OUT. "

Rasello's amputated leg.

Saturday at midnight, it was decided to his right leg amputated.

Rasello just before 13:00 the Air Force BK117 helicopter with a paramedic for the ambulance.

The helicopter, which was actually part of the Africa Aerospace & Defence Air Show this weekend in Pretoria, is the air force deployed to the rescue to help.

Captain. Heinrich Augoustides, police spokesman, said Friday 11:00 Rasello have a relative called to say he was in trouble.

The family when the Rustenburg police station, and a search began.

Apparently, the Rasello in the gorge walking as part of a religious cleansing ritual.

He is supposedly a member of the ZCC church. They come to the Rustenburg Kloof themselves with water in the mountain clean.

Ernst Kleynhans, owner of the Rustenburgkloof resort, said the resort has an agreement with the local council concluded to grant access to anyone from the church that the gap for that reason to visit.

Kleynhans confirmed that the resort did not have a day permit to Rasello issued.

Ten institutions were involved in the rescue.

Ever since Friday at all times at least 30 rescue workers on top of the mountain. There were about 100 people involved.

Wow, its a serious leg problem if the arm gets amputated when the leg is trapped. :)

That religion stuff is more dangerous than it appears.
