Buffalo Ice

I know it's now the wrong time of the year but having only just found this site, such is life. Just though i'd let people know about the ice at Buffalo. Yes thats right "ice!" If your one of those silly peolpe like myself who try to find ice in Victoria well heres another place to try. I did about three trips this winter and found ice on the Cathedral, the Hump and the Horn. Most of it is either frozen snow or verglassed rock but is non the less worth a visit. I just bouldered the routes which are between 5 - 20 meters in length and can be up to vertical. The Best ice was on the ski lift side of the Hump. So with Buffalo, Mt Buller west ridge, Pollux outcrop, Feathertop and a possibility of Mt Tabletop near Dinner Plain, Victoria has some worthy ice sites, at least for the desperate!

Howdy,

I am in the process of trying to compile an ice guide to Vic - and having never been up there when there is worthwhile ice I would love for you to write soemthing up and send it my way. The Mt Buffalo climbing guide mentions ice climbing so i guess it already has some history.

Yep i remember your mad speed aid of the end varient of Ozy. Jono and I are mad keen for another winter of drytooling adventures. Has anyone ever checked out Quartz Ridge on Bogong? It seems to have big cliffs, the right altitude but maybe its a BIG mission to walk in. Scan those photos and send them my way!

Quartz ridge, is that the ridge in the backgroung of your bogong - falls trip? Theres also mt tabletop, it's in the eastern vic guide. @ around 1600m. Overhanging on pockety rock up to 30m. worth a look i reckon. Are you in for a dry tooling session on the bluestone bridge over merri creek. just near the northcote aths track? Theres a few good routes with plenty of good pick torqueing and such.

I have no photos of what looks like the best bit of Quartz Ridge. I could see it through the trees when driving down from Falls Creek. There are cliffs marke don the map also at about 1700m+ altitude. The ridge shown in the photo linked below is Quartz Ridge, but the cliffs are on the other side not visable.

I might hold off on the drytooling until a bit closer to the winter seaosn. I am trying to stay focused on hard sport strength at the moment.

Neil,
Mike Wust and I spent a day in the Wall of China Gully and another day on the Tatra side of the Hump in 1988. Sorry, no photo's though we would have loved a shot of us next to the "Icy Rocks" warning sign at The Horn carpark. I wrote an article for Argus and there's a mixed climb "Frozen Parrott" in the Buffalo guide.

The Wall of China Gully has good mixed potential especially for climbing on verglassed rock. The Buffalo scene is highly dependent on temperature as it doesn't take much for everything to turn soggy. Cold, clear weather in late July seems the best bet.

Glenn Tempest and friends (and associates) may have climbed on Quartz Ridge on Bogong. Could be worth asking him
