Hello Chockstone -- I fly in to Sydney Nov 5 from the States for a month of visiting friends and climbing. We're planning to rent a car and hit the Grampians and Arapilies, maybe Tasmania if there's time, but we have friends in Sydney so want to spend a week or so there as well. (Yeah, a month isn't nearly enough time.) We were hoping to climb in the Blue Mountains but at this point as far as I can tell the whole park is closed and being unfamiliar with the area was hoping you kind people could tell me what other climbing options are available as day or overnight trips from Sydney and where one can find beta on those areas. Also if there are any areas in the Blues that are actually open for climbing.

We tend toward trad more than sport, and will mostly be climbing in the 15 - 22 grade range, depending on elbow health, stoke, head space, and which way the wind is blowing.

thanks.

The majority of the popular climbing areas in the Blue Mountains have not been burnt. I would imagine that by Nov 5 there would be plenty of crags to climb at. If it is still closed then another trad area with visiting is Point Perpendicular, 100m sandstone seacliffs about 2.5 hours south of Sydney.

Even during the last few days Mt Piddington in the town of Mt Vic has been totally sweet and it has a good smattering of trad in that grade range. Alot of crags up here are situated 'upwind' of any fires and are uneffected. "thecrag.com" is a good online guide until you get a nice pretty one with pictures.

Thanks, that's good to know. We have guides for the Victoria crags, but have not been able to find one for the Blues in the US, so it's been a bit tricky trying to figure out where the crags are relative to the fires.

p.s climbing and placing gear on Blueys rock will be a total anticlimax after Victoria. Grampians and Arapiles are truly amazing, but the views are nice here.

Hi Kellie

Right now in the Blue Mountains the fires are out and there are plenty of crags to climb at. There are a few areas which are currently closed but are on council land and virtually unaffected by the fires so hopefully they'll reopen soon. The National Park might take a bit longer to reopen, which means you might miss out on some cool multi-pitch routes, but most of the good crags are outside the park (and unaffected).

The guidebooks are available HERE.

You can also buy the guides at local climbing shops . . .
