Hey,
does anybody know if there's climbing in Tahiti? and, if so, what it's like?
Looks like an awesome place - would be heaven if there is climbing too!

Well I wouldn't need any convincing to visit Tahiti, but the closest I am ever likely to get Teahupoo is looking at it on my screen saver.

I was there in 2003. Stayed at the Bonjuir (Good Orgasm) closest guest house to Teahupoo. It was
pumping the day we left. Big tow in session with the Billabong film crew out and all the big local guys
getting pulled into waves which blew my mind and cruising them like a soft day at Crunchies. We
travelled all around Tahiti iti and Tahiti nui and saw nothing remotely climbable. Not that we were
looking for anything. We were there for the surf. It is as French as France with the added bonus of
having truly beautiful Polynesian people populating it's stunning tropical landscape. You can be sure
that if it did have climbing possibilities the French would have developed it. To the French climbing is
a mainstream activity, not some funky esoteric pursuit followed by a tiny minority as here. If you
would like to climb in a South Pacific tropical paradise then try looking closer to home at New
Caledonia. I climbed and surfed there. They have solid bolt equipped limestone crags. It is of course
another French colony with a very French feel and many French Europeans living in the towns but also
has an authentic Island style culture amongst the indigenous Kanaks. It is a flaming beautiful set of
bewilderingly paradyllic islands. La Piscine on Ile des Pines is an otherworldly snorkelling experience.
They love Bob Marley big time.

Kaj - how were the waves in New Cal ? The bonefishing is meant to be great as well.
Are the waves generally easy to access ?

I'd be interested in some further info on the climbing in new caledonia if you've got any.
I went last year and took my booties just in case but couldn't find any info decent enough to convince me that the climbing would be worth the 2hr drive to get there (best info I could get consisted of a guy in the tourist office circling a town on a map)
Whenever I google it all I get is a million tourist brochures. There's a good chance I'll be back later in the year so wouldn't mind being better prepared this time.
Cheers

I can't believe you're all disrespecting Jodestar's thread by talking about New Calandonia ...
I did find some stuff online about climbing there once but didn't do anything sensible like bookmark it. Have you tried looking under Nouvelle Caladonie?

Hey Kaj,
thanks for all that info! was the surfing good in New Caledonia?

yep did all possible french versions with no luck. Found out enough to work out it wasn't an elaborate
hoax, but little more.

It helps if you search in French. The French are pretty proud of their language. Using keywords like
"escalade" instead of "climbing" helps. Bang in Escalade Nouvelle Caledonie and you'll get, top of the
list:

That's got some pretty nice photos and information but you'll have to learn French if you want to fully
understand it.
There isn't much easily accesible surf on New Caledonia. There is a great beach break near Roche
Percee on the main island. Worked left and right mechanically all day when I was there. Lucky maybe.
Had it to myself. Most of the waves are on the reef passes on the surrounding barrier reef.

Thanks kaj.
BTW.
I'm stupid no matter which way you look at it.
I either didn't french word google it - which is stupid in and of itself.
But f me I'm sure I did? Possible excuses. . . I may have been drunk, or squeezing a last google out of a timed noumea internet cafe at the time. (thin but all I can come up with)
Alternatively, I did french google it and missed it as only five of the top 6 hits relate to it (my reading french aint *that* bad!)
Either way like I said I'm . . . .
Hang on - them geckos are a club and I'm not really into them cos of the rules and shit. No wonder I ignored them.

I've never been in a climbing club either. But the photos on the site give you some clues about the
climbing in New Caledonia. It's hardly frequently updated but is of some limited value. The easiest mini
crag with a few bolts is just outside Noumea under the Napoleonic fort past the theatre.
By the way there's also climbable limestone on at least one Tongan island I've been to and there's a
huge limestone monolith on Rarotonga, Cook Islands, that could provide some sport if the humidity
ever drops to a tolerable level for pulling on rock.
Cheers, Karl

Actually I've been a member of a few clubs - just never to meet that special sweet someone to belay (me).
M9 - I have no idea what you are talking about - unless you mean that you'd be entitled to a bulk discount with the number of usernames you've got.

re your

ie in the context of the 'non VCC' thread that I assumed you were referring to; ... chocky is a 'free club', ... (that by default has it's own rules/regulations), ... and to non-clubbies represents an enigma;... though one doesn't have to pay for it.
re

One (my current), and a half (my previous), user id's* hardly counts for much.
I wouldn't have changed the original/s if hexy hadn't persisted in ripping them off.
They are documented in my profile to avoid any confusion of historical posts; ... though I must admit that there are still a number of similar to my old ones, doing the rounds...
~> best you speak to those flies in the ointment for clarification?
(*I have kept the original account and simply changed the name of it. If this were not the case then there would be far fewer posts attributed to it.)
Hmm.

msg. maybe a little late, but if yr still interested; tahiti is partof french polynesia. no noticeable climbing there but the marquesas to the n.e., still in french polynesia and accessible by the local airline, has.
1 island in particular has an orange and red wall with a very bright yellow streak, coming out of the ocean, visible a couple of miles out to sea, around 300m long and 150m high. this wall has a definite crack feature running diagonaly through it.
this island is close to the island of hiva oa, which has an airport.
the wall is vertical, and no reason to assume it to be anything but solid. there are though other factors which would lead me to place it into the catagory of 'adventureclimbing'.

hehe, adventure climbing alright! maybe i could go to hiva and paddle across on my surfboard ;-) hehe. somebody should definitely check it out and see if it's worth turning into a climbing destination!
