O.T - Religion & Climbing Poll. |

This poll was started out of curiosity because of a discussion on the 'O.T. - Dalai Lama coming to Melbourne' thread. It is my impression that a larger proportion of the climbing community is Buddhist than the general population. I am interested in exploring the socialogical significance of this, if it is in fact the case.
According to Australian Bureau of Statistics 2006 census data, 2.1% of the general population is Buddhist.
Apologies for any offence caused by the simplistic way I grouped the major religions or my omission of any system of belief.

Surely you should offer Jedi as an option? How about Wiccan? Scientologist?

i don't see pastafarian as an option either... peace & noodles!

Now I'm even more concerned - Scientology gets on the religion list and Jedi and Wiccan don't! Surely something started by a science fiction writer and something started by a science fiction film are equally valid?

What does the last option even mean?

You are in a no win situation Wendy because the poll feature only allows a maximum of 8 options.

Shamanism and/or Indigenous systems? I voted 'other'...

The list changes everytime I look at it!
I have a friend who put her cats details into the census because she object to govt collecting of her information. What does that say for how much faith we can put in the census?

Poll only needs two options.
Atheist and gobbledegook.

I was actually being 'colourful' with tha one. In reality I was at work killing time until a meeting.. I had a terrible coffee and a Picnic.
Anyway. This has a lot of potential.
I think the stats will be biased. The internet acts as a demographic filter and this sample won't be representative of the whole population. Someone needs to do face to face interviews at a broad range of crags; trad and sport.

Really??? How'd you figure that one out?
Having spent the last 25 years climbing on various parts of this planet, I can say I have never met a praticing buddhist.
Apart from yourself, you ever met any Hero?
Religion is for the weak of mind.
If you understood the word atheist, then you would know why it can not be used in the same context as your theistic options.
Where's the option for Elvis??? He's the one true God!!!

I wouldn't presume to ridicule any religion : they are quite capable of doing it themselves. If people like to think that they are Buddhists well that's fine, it's one of the more benign religions.
I'm attracted to the notion that religious belief is a usually mild form of mental illness that is fairly benign and possibly even beneficial for many people. However there are a significant number of people who suffer a severe form of the malady. Maybe someday someone will get a Nobel prize for medicine for producing a cure for it.

Wow! You want to know something weird - over 70 percent of chockstoners have above average intelligence.
Surely some of you believe you will come back as a wabbit or a pweddy flower?

I assume you're proposing this relates to the 70% of atheists in the poll?
