2013. A YEAR OF CELEBRATIONS!
As many of you are aware, 2013 is the 50th Anniversary of climbing at Arapiles. And while we are at it, it is also the 60th Anniversary of the VCC. And as such, this obviously deserves some celebration. This year is also the Nati Frinj Biennale event in November . No doubt there is bound to be some festivities between various members of the climbing community throughout the weekend also but just to let everyone know ahead of time, that there will be a couple of special events that will celebrate this special milestone on this weekend at Natimuk and Mt Arapiles

Climbing and Community – Mt Arapiles
presented by the Victorian Climbing Club
50th Anniversary pictorial of climbing at the mount. From FA on that first weekend through to iconic moments across the years and the people that lived it. A snapshot of snapshots. Images that capture the essence of what Arapiles means to us. Climbing, comraderie and community.

Arapiles 50. A Celebration. – Sat 2nd Nov -Monday 4th Nov
Picnic Shelter grounds at Centenary Park. Presented by Friends of Arapiles, CliffCare, Victorian Climbing Club and Parks Victoria.
This small scale forum will look at climbing at Arapiles over the last 50 years from the sport itself to the environment we use to explore it. Static displays set up within the picnic shelter meeting place across the weekend will encourage people to visit within their own time frames. These displays will cover the many aspects that climbers engage in when they climb. This will culminate in a presentation Monday 4th November evening by a number of notable climbers from the early years, followed by a Q & A style discussion. A lively attitude will be encouraged! An entertaining and thoughtful approach to climbing then and now, what has and hasn’t changed and what do climbers want and expect from their climbing and the environment they engage in.
The presentation of slides and anecdotes, includes the climbers Geoff Schirmer, Michael Stone, Simon Mentz, Peter Jackson and Louise Shepherd telling their own unique stories from the storybook of Arapiles.
The Q&A forum discussion has panel members –Climbers Keith Lockwood, Simon Mentz, Ross Taylor alongside Parks Victoria representatives Graham Parkes (Grampians District Ranger), Alan Braithwaite(Mt Arapiles Ranger in Charge) that are all poised to fire up the night with their answers to your questions. A healthy dialogue to be engaging in with the future of Arapiles now under discussion.

In keeping with the flavour of the art festival, Bridget Hillebrand, a climber, artist and art lecturer will be combining her recent PhD research and weaving it into the forum experience. Art as a catalyst for, and expressions of communal discussion. An interactive narrative where the landscape is physically interwoven with the stories, meanings and truths of the local community.
Long strips of canvas cloth will be wound into balls (available at numerous sites) and participants will be invited to write their response to ...

Memories of Arapiles
Do you have a memory of Mt Arapiles that you would like to share or... a wish for its future preservation?

The cloth will then be physically wound and tied through the landscape as a reminder of the hopes for the future that bind us to this special place.

VCC Anniversary Dinner – 60 Years on the Vertical – Natimuk.
Sunday 3rd November – 6.30pm
An opportunity for members new, old and past to meet, socialize drink, eat and celebrate the history of the club. With the 50th anniversary of climbing at Arapiles inextricably linked with the Victorian Climbing Club, these two celebrations will happen together. A toast to many more years to come.

But wasn't the VCC constituted in 1952? It says so in the article "Establishment" By David Hogg on page 5 in the publication that I edited for the 50th anniversary celebrations (in 2002). It is mentioned again in the article "Hemp Ropes & Army Boots by Merv Lia. This would mean that we are celebrating the 61st anniversary of the VCC wouldn't it? Any way, Glenn should have a copy of the Mega-Argus that was produced in honour of the occasion.
